Optimal Post Length for LinkedIn Engagement
While LinkedIn allows 3,000 characters per post, the optimal length depends on your content type and goal. Research consistently shows that posts between 1,200–1,500 characters (roughly 200–250 words) earn the highest engagement rates. This length is long enough to deliver real value but short enough to be read in full. For thought leadership pieces, 2,000–2,500 characters can work well if every word earns its place.
How LinkedIn Truncation Works
LinkedIn displays roughly the first 210 characters of a post on desktop before showing the “...see more” link. On mobile, this threshold drops to approximately 150 characters. Any content below this fold requires the reader to actively click “see more” — which means your opening lines need to be compelling enough to earn that click. Line breaks, spaces, and special characters all count toward the character limit and can affect where truncation occurs.
Truncation by Content Type
Posts: ~210 characters on desktop, ~150 on mobile before “see more”. About section: first 2–3 lines visible before “See more” fold. Headlines: shown in full (220 char max) but may be truncated in search results on mobile. Comments: shown in full up to the 1,250 character limit. Connection requests: the full 300 characters are shown to the recipient.
Tips for Working Within LinkedIn’s Character Limits
For posts, front-load your hook in the first 150 characters. Use short sentences and line breaks for readability — they make content feel shorter than it is. For headlines, use the full 220 characters to maximize your keyword and value proposition space. For connection requests, the 300-character limit forces you to be specific — mention something personal about the person’s profile rather than sending a generic message.
